He was educated at King Henry VIII School Coventry, and Goldsmiths' College London. He was director of music at Emmanuel Church, Northwood Middlesex 1961-81; at Bushey Hall School Watford 1965-83; and since 1983 at the British School of Brussels, Belgium.
He has been music editor for various publications of the Jubilate Hymns Group.

He came from a literary home, both parents being well-known authors. He was educated at Leeds Grammar School, and at the Royal College of Music, 1893-1901, where he studied piano and then (with C.V.Stanford) composition. He held a number of posts as organist and choirmaster in London, including St Luke's Chelsea 1904-26; and he taught at the Royal College of Music 1923-39.
He composed many orchestral and choral works, chamber music, organ and church music, but particularly songs and piano music.

He was a chorister in Canterbury Cahedral 1844-49, where his father was a lay vicar. He was a nephew of George Elvey , and a pupil of George's brother Stephen at Oxford. He was Precentor and Master of the Choristers at St Columba's College, Rathfarnham, Ireland 1856-57; organist of Southwell Minster 1857-72; assistant organist of Chester Cathedral 1973-75; and organist of St Andrew's Church Nottingham 1876-1905.
He founded and was accompanist to the Nottingham Sacred Harmonic Society. His compositions were confined to church music.

She was the daughter of a parish minister of the Church of Scotland, and lived with her father in the manses of Dunnottar, Peterhead and finally Crimond, Aberdeenshire.

He was educated at the University of Georgia, the Moody Bible Institute Chicago, Columbia Theological Seminary Decatur Ga., and the University of South Carolina. He was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1914, and served churches in Georgia and in South and North Carolina. He organized the Shenandoah Presbyterian Church in Miami, Florida, in 1927; and ministered there until retiring in 1951.
The date of death given in RS at No.308 is incorrect.
