He studied music with Wolfgang Fortner 1950-54. He taught composition at Heidelberg Church Music Institute 1954-63; at Spandau Church Music School, Berlin 1963-75; and at the State Music Academy, Frankfurt am Main from 1975.
He has composed much choral music with a variety of instrumental accompaniments; and he is noted for using jazz instruments and rhythms in his church music in an attempt to breathe new life into the tradition. He has said that jazz is the only kind of contemporary music that can still express joy.
