This book was prepared by an Anglican committee set up in 1959 and chaired by The Rev. Canon H.C.Taylor, with Robin Sheldon as Music Editor. Its declared aim was to provide a replacement for The Hymnal Companion to the Book of Common Prayer and The Church Hymnal for the Christian Year. (For notes on earlier books with these titles, see Hymnal Companion and Church Hymnal.)
A supplement containing 49 additional (alternative) tunes was included in the 1975 and subsequent issues.
[No connection with the 1868/71 book of the same title (plus the definite article).]
