Luther: Hymn-books and other writings
(a) An edition of Luther's hymn texts was published in 1853, edited by Dr Leonard Woolsley Bacon and Nathan H.Allen, under the title
The Hymns of Martin Luther. Set To Their Original Melodies. With an English Version. (New York, 1853)
This has been reproduced (1996) as part of the Gutenberg Project, and is included in this Enchiridion (whose name, of course, was borrowed from one of Luther's hymn collections). The Bacon/Allen edition contained, in addition to the hymn texts and translations, four of Luther's Prefaces to hymn-books published in 1525, 1542, 1543 and 1545. The Gutenberg transcription also includes a translation of Luther's "Small Catechism".
The Bacon/Allen edition of Luther's Hymns is generally referred to here as "the Gutenberg file". Some rearrangement of its sections has been made, to make it easier to find particular items; and a few apparent errors in the Gutenberg transcription have been amended. (The Gutenberg Project, which covers a vast range of historic texts, is not guaranteed to be free of transcription errors.)
The "Gutenberg" file contains many hymns not represented in Rejoice & Sing; but the file is reproduced in its entirety, in accordance with the wishes of the Project team. Notes on items which are relevant to RS hymns have been inserted as appropriate, and the indexing has been rearranged accordingly.
