English Psalter New Version 1696/98

(a) A New Version of the Psalms of David, Fitted to the Tunes Used in Churches. By N.Tate and N.Brady. London, Printed by M.Clark: for the Company of Stationers, 1696

(b) - do - . . . The Second Edition corrected . . . , London 1698

(c) A New Version of the Psalms of David, Fitted to the Tunes Used in Churches. By N.Tate and N.Brady. London, Printed by T.Hodgkin, for the Company of Stationers, 1698. And are to be sold at Stationers'-Hall, near Ludgate, and by most Booksellers.

In addition to a Dedication to King William, also included in the two first-mentioned editions, this one contained an Authorisation dated "At the Court in Kensington, December 3, 1696. Present the King's Most Excellent Majesty in Council".

The first of the above-mentioned editions (a) was not reprinted after 1696, but there is evidence, from two copies both dated 1796, that the second and third of the 1696/98 versions both continued to be used, in spite of many differences of text. One of these later copies is taken from the third version (c), and carries both the royal Authorisation dated 3rd Dec.1696 and the approval of the Bishop of London dated 23rd May 1698. By 1782, however, printing was being undertaken by the Printer to the University, Cambridge, in the version containing the Bishop of London's approval (see below ); and the "Second edition corrected" gradually passed out of use.

In addition to the metrical psalms, the Supplement contained twelve hymns, these being mainly metrical versions of the common liturgical canticles, the Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and two versions of the hymn `Veni Creator Spiritus', together with a few other paraphrases from Scripture. The only one of these to survive in common use is the best-known of Nahum Tate's paraphrases:
