Allon, Henry: Children's Worship

"Children's Worship" : A Book of Sacred Song for Home and School. Edited by Henry Allon, D.D. Hodder & Stoughton, 1878

A collection of 645 hymns and 7 "Graces"; in arrangement largely indistinguishable from other hymnals for adult congregations in the same (nonconformist) tradition; in contents somewhat more distinguishable, in that hymns considered suitable for children (in their subject-matter, if not their language) are included with many traditional adult hymns of less obvious relevance.

Henry Allon's Preface is brief: --

PREFACE

The aim of the Editor in this compilation has been to include in one volume Hymns simple enough for the Infant School and mature enough for the most advanced Bible Classes, and sufficient in number and variety for all uses of School and Home worship.

Very earnest thanks are given to the authors and proprietors of hymns for permission, kindly and generously granted, to use the compositions which bear their names. And forgiveness is asked for any involuntary invasion of rights which could not be ascertained.

CANONBURY,
May 6th, 1878

Allon, Henry: Church Song

"Church Song, in Its Relations to Church Life." A Lecture, by The Rev. Henry Allon. London: James Nisbet & Co., Berners St.

This is the text of a Lecture given as one of the "Exeter Hall Lectures" for the season 1861-2, sponsored by the YMCA. The programme states "The Musical Examples will be sung by a Choir of upwards of 100 Voices, under the direction of Mr. Smythson, and accompanied by Dr.Gauntlett". (H.J.Gauntlett was Henry Allon's organist at Union Chapel, Islington.)

The Lecture, which must have been a lengthy event, covered a broad range of church music, mediaeval and "modern", though the contemporary examples appear to have been restricted to three items by Dr Gauntlett himself.

The printed record is undated; but the script of Henry Allon's Introductory Remarks indicates that the occasion must have been very soon after the death of the Prince Consort (14 December 1861).
