Bramley & Stainer: Christmas Carols
Christmas Carols New and Old; The Words edited by the Rev. Henry Ramsden Bramley, M.A., Fellow and Tutor of Saint Mary Magdalen College, Oxford. The Music edited by Sir John Stainer, M.A., Mus.Doc., of the same College. London, Novello & Co.
The first edition was published in 1871, and there are said (NOBC) to have been three series from 1871-1878, with a combined edition in 1880. Julian (p.212b) describes it as containing 70 carols from various sources, but without giving a date. An undated edition ( ILL, Hampshire County Lib.) does indeed contain 70 carols, and may be the combined (1880) edn; it is marked on the title-page "War Price 6/-", and it may be reasonable to assume that this was a reprint made during or after 1914.

A further five had been printed in a periodical Word and Music during 1984 and 1985.

(a) The Bristol Tune Book, first series 1863
- Xrefs:
- RS-183 (431) Epiphany Hymn
- RS-359 (476, 683) Festus
- RS-450 Gildas
- RS-273 St Elisabeth
- RS-488 Samson
- RS-179 Sharon
The book contained five sections, with continuous numbering throughout, as follows:
1-257
Hymn tunes
258-262
Metrical chants (for hymn texts)
263-282
Single chants (for prose psalms &c.)
283-332
Double chants ditto
333-342
Gregorian tones
The Compilers are not named, but a Preface gives a brief explanation of the origin of the book (in its published form). In most cases the tunes only are given (harmonised, with metre, tune name, and composer or source). In a few cases words of the first verse (and, rarely, an additional verse) are interlined with the tune.
(b) - do - , Second Series 1876
- Xrefs:
- RS-359 (476, 683) Festus
- RS-66 Wentworth
The total number of tunes was more than doubled. The Second Series was apparently published as a separate Collection; but combined editions of both Series were also available, in which the contents of the First Series appear first, followed by the following:
343 - 640
Hymn tunes
641 - 670
Single chants (for prose psalms &c.)
671 - 674
Double chants ditto
In the Second Series nearly all the tunes have one, and occasionally more than one, verse interlined with the music.
(c) - do - Supplement 1881
This also was apparently published as a separate Collection, but combined editions after 1881 simply add a further 37 hymn tunes, numbered 715 - 751.
(d) - do - Third Series
The copy seen (in the Congregational Library, London) is undated, with no explicit evidence of publication date. However, the Publisher's Preface states that a number of its tunes were provided for certain hymns in W.Garrett Horder's Worship Song, which did not appear with that title until 1898. The first editions (of Worship Song) apparently did not contain tunes, which were added in the 1905 edition of that book. It may be inferred, therefore, that the Bristol Tune Book Third Series was published some time between 1898 and 1905.
In the above-mentioned Preface, its author's name is given as "W. Crofton Hemmans, Publisher and Proprietor"; and the "Musical Editor" is identified as Josiah Booth.
The contents of the Third Series, up No.714, appear to be identical to the combined First and Second Series. In place of the 1881 Supplement, however, a longer section of tunes appears, numbered 715 - 904, in which the 37 tunes of the 1881 supplement are merged, apparently randomly, throughout the final section.
The Title Page of the Third Series gives the Editor's name as "Alfred Stone, and Others".

(a) The British Magazine for March, 1834
Not, of course, the periodical founded by John Newbury in 1759, edited by Tobias Smollett, to which a major contributor was Oliver Goldsmith. That one lasted only until December 1767 (OCEL, 1985).
From c.1833 onwards, a periodical under this name was the primary medium for publication of articles and verses by Newman, Keble, Pusey and others involved in what became known as the `Oxford Movement' in High Church Anglicanism. These included the celebrated "Tracts for the Times", from which the nickname `Tractarian' was derived.
Many of the poems and hymns were subsequently reprinted in Lyra Apostolica 1836 .
