Hambly, Cyril G.: A Hymn for the Lectionary
C.G.Hambly: A Hymn for the Lectionary: 70 hymns and tunes. Caedmon, 1981
A collection of original hymns and tunes for each Sunday of the year, following the Lectionary as described in the Author's preface (below).
These hymns are offered -- one for every Sunday of the Christian year -- following the Lectionary, as it appears in Series Three of the Parish Communion and in the Methodist Service Book.Readers will notice that there is an emphasis on morning lessons, and that many of the hymns are written with children in mind. It is hoped, therefore, that they will be found useful for Family Worship.
The controlling lesson has not always been used, but there is always a strong Biblical emphasis in the hymns, as befits a collection closely asociated with a lectionary. A number of paraphrases are included; for these, and also where a particular reference may be of special interest, the context is shown.
Nearly all the hymns are written to regular metres and can be sung to the well-known tunes that are suggested. They can therefore be used by congregations without special preparation.
However, new tunes are offered in each instance, for choirs and any who would like to try them. Two are not original, and these are No.10 which is my arrangement of the folk song "Waly waly"; and No.24 which makes use of a tune from Beethoven's String Quartet Opus 130.
Though some of the hymns and tunes have been accepted for publication in other books, many are published here for the first time.
In all instances I have retained the copyright, but give permission for words to be duplicated for use in services.
It is hoped that the tunes will be found "singable" and easy for congregations to pick up. They may also be used as choir items, introits and solos.
Some have already been used in my series of "Seasonal Services" details of which, together with other church music available, are given at the end of the book. [ see Biographical notes ]
I wouold like to express my great debt to Revd. Fred Pratt Green for all his help and encouragement, and it is to him that this little book is dedicated.
Neither could it have been accomplished without the love and help of my wife Dorothy, who was my "study-widow" and who helped so muh in the final preparation of the text.

Haweis, Thomas: Carmina Christo
(Julian, p.498b)
Thomas Haweis: Carmina Christo; or, Hymns to the Saviour. Designed for the Use and Comfort of Those who worship the Lamb that was slain. Bath, S.Hayward, 1792
Contained 139 hymns (presumably all of his own composition, but this has not been verified). It was `a companion to the Select Collection of Hymns compiled by the Countess of Huntingdon for use in the chapels of her Connexion, and was often bound up with it' (RCHh, page 366). (Haweis was chaplain to Lady Huntingdon and manager of her chapels, and for some years officiated at the Connexion chapel at Bath.
An enlarged edition containing 256 hymns was published in London in 1808.

A list of " . . . the names of those who were born or died in a known year in the British Isles and who wrote or shared in the making of a hymn in English or a tune (not a harmonisation or a descant-setting only) included in a major British hymn-book published between January 1901 and December 1975".
The list contains, where known, the day month and year of birth and death and the place of these events for each name included. Thirty-three hymnals and Supplements (in some cases with more than one edition of the same Title) are listed as the basis for inclusion. Authors and Composers are listed separately, in alphabetical order in each case.
