(a) Songs and Hymns of the Scottish Highlands, ed. Lachlan Macbean, 1888
Gaelic and English words, and single-line melodies.
(b) [IL] Songs and Hymns of the Gael, ed. Lachlan Macbean, 1900
An Introductory essay on "Highland Songs, Hymns and Music" precedes part I.
Part III of Songs & Hymns of the Gael contains the Gaelic versions (music and 1 verse of words) of 12 psalm-tunes; the melody-line only is given, with `lining-out' leads for the Precentor and the very florid decoration of the congregational melody lines. The effect of the melodic decoration is that it is very rare to find an interval other than a single tone or semitone.
The psalm-tunes included are
- Bangor to Ps. 42
- Coleshill to Ps. 121
- French to Ps. 116 (also Ross-shire version)
- Dundee to Ps. 65 (also Sutherland-shire version)
- Elgin to Ps. 44
- Martyrdom to Ps. 92
- Martyrs to Ps. 79:11-
- New London to Ps. 27:7-
- Old London to Ps. 131
- Stilt to Ps. 141
- St David's to Ps. 106
- St Paul's to Ps. 122

Madan, M.: Ps.& Hy's 1760- (contents)
Martin Madan: A Collection of Psalms and Hymns
- in a section headed GLORIA PATRI
Contents, 3rd edn 1764; also 8th edn 1774 (both in the British Library): as in 1st edition, but with correction of numbering in 4th or later edn.
and an Appendix, containing 24 hymns numbered 171-194 (172-195).
Some alterations of text or corrections of misprints occur in the 3rd edition (compared with the 1st edn) - though further further misprints seem to have crept in here and there (not surprisingly) in the later one.
By the time of the 8th edition 1794, several of the hymns had been shortened by the omission of verses. (`Ye servants of God', for example, was reduced from its original six verses (vv.2 & 3 still included in 1764) to the four verses now in common use (Wesley's 1, 4, 5 & 6).

The following hymns occur in the first and subsequent editions of Martin Madan's Collection of Psalms & Hymns (1760- ) and also in Rejoice & Sing. Cross-references are to Enchiridion notes on the words; but Madan's versions are not specifically mentioned there unless significant differences occur compared with the original sources of the hymns.
