The Liturgy of Malabar
One of the many bitter theological controversies of the 5th century, leading eventually to the formulation of the Nicene Creed and to the Council of Chalcedon in 451 A.D., concerned the question of whether Jesus was `really' human. Among other conflicts of opinion, it led to a row between Nestorius, patriarch of Constantinople, and Cyril of Alexandria, who secured the support of the Bishop of Rome in having Nestorius deposed and excommunicated in 431. Nestorius himself, as is now known, was not guilty of the heresy of which he was accused - roughly, that the "two natures" of the "son of Mary" and the "Son of God" were never really combined, and to say that they were would be blasphemy - but his followers were disapproved of and eventually forced to emigrate. They settled in Persia, and a version of the "Nestorian heresy" became the basis for the continuing church in that area. Nestorian Churches were founded in many places east of the Persian frontier, including Malabar (now roughly the Kerala coast of S.W.India) and even China. The Malabar Church became known as the Church of St Thomas, or Mar Thoma Church.
The Nestorian Liturgy is preserved in Syriac in The Uniat Missal of Malabar, 1844.

(a) John Mason: Spiritual Songs; or, Songs of Praise to Almighty God upon several occasions, 1683
- Xref:
- RS-661 How shall I sing that majesty
(b) - do - The 7th Edition Corrected, 1701
In the twenty editions of this collection, under the general title Songs of Praise, numerous additional items were successively incorporated. The "Corrected 7th Edition", a copy of which is in Dr Williams's Library, includes Mason's paraphrase of the Song of Songs, his Poem on Dives and Lazarus, and Penitential Cries (originally a collection of six poems), all of which had been appended to the Songs of Praise in various editions since 1685. The Penitential Cries have the extended title Begun by the Author of the Songs of Praise, and carried on by another Hand, and are dated 1693, the year preceding Mason's death; the "another Hand" seems to have been that of Thomas Shepherd (1665-1739), and his additions appeared with Mason's original six poems from 1693 onwards.
There are some indications that in the 7th edition, if not before, some of the "Songs of Praise" may have been altered or extended. The first hymn in the collection "How shall I sing that majesty" is described in some hymn-book Companions as having been in twelve 4-line verses; whereas in the 7th edition it has twelve 8-line verses, some parts of which appear elsewhere in a cento (beginning "Thousands of thousands stand around") which is described by Julian as being taken "from Songs i. and ii.". Morover, John Mason's name nowhere appears in the 7th edition: it is not on the Title page; the Preface is unsigned; and none of the hymns bears an author's ascription. There is no doubt about Mason's original authorship, of course; but the presence of editorial influence is not yet ruled out.
[ An earlier edition than 1701 has not yet been located - DSG. ]
