Collection of Hymns for . . . Methodists, 1800
A revision, authorized by the Methodist Conference, of John Wesley's 1780 Collection and its subsequent editions. By 1799 the original book had grown, with unauthorized additions, from Wesley's 525 hymns to 550. The revisers corrected numerous errors introduced during the previous 20 years, omitted 6 of the additional hymns and introduced others, to make a new total of 560 hymns.
The Compilers (names given in Julian, p.728a) were Dr Coke, Messrs G.Storey, H.Moore and Adam Clarke.

Wesley's Hymns & New Supplement
A Collection of Hymns, for the use of the People called Methodists. By the Rev. John Wesley, M.A., sometime Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford. With a New Supplement, 1876-7
Compiled by a Committee appointed by the Wesleyan Conference in 1874. It contained altogether 1008 hymns and 18 metrical "Graces Before and After Meat". John Wesley's Preface to the 1780 Collection was reprinted, together with a further Preface by the Compilers.
The first 539 hymns in this collection were taken (with some alterations) from the 1800 edition of Wesley's 1780 Collection.
The Supplement, beginning at No.540, is divided into Thematic headings, of which the first (No.s 540-641) consists of psalm paraphrases: 31 of these are by either Charles or John Wesley; 21 by Isaac Watts; 7 by James Montgomery; 5 from Tate and Brady's New Version of the Psalter; 4 by H.F.Lyte; and the remainder by a variety of authors.
H.J.Gauntlett was initially involved in the work as music advisor, but died before the book was published.

The Methodist Sunday-School Hymn-Book. A Collection of Hymns and Spiritual Songs for Use in Schools and Families. Compiled by Direction of the Wesleyan Methodist Conference. London 1879

Compiled by a Committee appointed by the Wesleyan Conference in 1901, and with "the friendly co-operation" of the Methodist New Connexion, the Wesley Reform Union, and the Methodist Church of Australasia. Frederick Bridge, then Organist of Westminster Abbey, was appointed Music Editor, with a Music Committee also appointed by the Conference. The book contained 981 hymns, and 10 Canticles and Responses pointed for chanting. The Music Edition also contained an Appendix of 39 "Supplemental Tunes".
John Wesley's 1780 Preface was not included, thereby attracting the wrath of Bernard Manning in a celebrated address to Methodist students in Cambridge. (reprinted in The Hymns of Wesley and Watts, Epworth Press 1942, p.10).

Compiled during the negotiations which led to the Union of the three main branches of Methodism in 1932 - The Wesleyan Methodists, the Primitive Methodists, and the United Methodist Church (itself a union, in 1907, of the Methodist New Connection, the Bible Christians, and the United Methodist Free Churches). A joint Committee of thethree main branches was set up in 1929 to prepare a new Hymn Book for the re-united denomination.
The book contained 984 hymns, 50 single-verse items (mainly extracts from other hymns), 32 "additional tunes", 14 Canticles, and a selection of 76 Psalms and other passages of scripture pointed for chanting.
The Compilers' Preface explained the origin of the book, and was followed by a re-print of John Wesley's 1780 Preface.

This replaced earlier editions of The Methodist School Hymn Book. It contained 647 items including nine psalms and 41 carols. A Companion, written by W.S.Kelynack, was published at the same time by the Epworth Press.
Both volumes were reviewed by Erik Routley, with typically rumbustious appraisal, in the Bulletin of the Hymn Society of G.B. & Ireland, July 1950, p.161.

Copy not yet located. Julian (p.737a) indicates that it contained 13 hymns by H.H.Milman, which had previously appeared in the posthumous edition of Reginald Heber's Hymns written and adapted to the Weekly Church Service of the Year. It is not known whether any additional hymns or poems by Milman were included in the 1837 Selection.
There is some doubt about the number 13. Julian's note on Heber's collection (p.503b, last line) states that 12 hymns by Milman were included, but the figure 13 is given in the corresponding note on p.737.
12 hymns have been identified from information given in Julian and in other hymn-books; see list below.

(a) John Milton: Poems, 1645
(b) John Milton: Poems in English and Latin, 1673
This Second Edition of Milton's poems, published in the year before his death, contained most of his `minor verse'. The copy seen is part of an 1817 reprint, in 2 vol.s, of his Poetical Works. Vol.1 contains Paradise Lost; Vol.2 contains Paradise Regained, Samson Agonistes (both first published in 1671), and Poems upon Several Occasions including a number of Latin and other non-English verses.
The last section, which probably represents the contents of the 1673 publication (not confirmed), includes the following as well as numerous shorter verses. Dates of composition (c) or first publication (p), where these have been ascertained, are added here. (Sources of information on dates are H.C.Beeching's edition of The English Poems of John Milton, OUP (World's Classics) 1913; the Oxford Companion to English Literature (5th edn, Margaret Drabble, OUP 1985); and the aforementioned 1817 reprint of the 1673 collection which gives dates for some of the poems including all the psalm paraphrases.)

(a) Mission Praise, Marshall Morgan & Scott 1983
Originally published as Mission England Praise, a booklet of hymns, songs and choruses for use during the public meetings of the evangelistic campaign known as Mission England and led by Billy Graham during 1952-3.
A short Foreword by Tom Houston states that
" . . . This book was originally compiled to enable the uniting power of music to operate during and after Mission England. . . . "
It contained 282 hymns and other items, and initially consisted of a words-only booklet. A tune-book with accompaniments was subsequently published in a loose-leaf spiral binding; the principal music editor was Roland Fudge.
(b) Mission Praise 2, Marshall Morgan & Scott 1987
A number of individual local churches having begun to make use of Mission Praise for regular services, it was recognised that the limited repertoire of that booklet made it inadequate as a replacement for a main hymn-book. An extension, named Mission Praise 2, was therefore compiled by Peter Horrobin and Greg Leavers, in an attempt to achieve a complete book for regular use. The second volume begins with Hymn No. 283, to follow the last item in the original booklet. In each of the two books the sequence of hymns is by alphabetic order of First Lines throughout.

(d) Mission Praise, Combined Edition, Marshall Pickering 1990
Under the same editorship as Mission Praise 2, this combined the original contents of the two preceding volumes and Supplement, and added a further 41 items, making a total count of 798.
A critical review of its contents appeared in the Bulletin of the Hymn Society of GB & I, No.187 April 1991.
