Preface to the Second Edition:
"Three motives induce the author of these Hymns to put forth a second edition. First, an increased demand for them; secondly, that several new Hymns have been added illustrative of seasons and occasions not noticed before; and, lastly, that the book has had conferred upon it the greatest honour as well as benefit it could have enjoyed, namely, a careful revision, on its first appearance, by one, to whom the Church owes, not only her noblest specimen of literature in this department, but still more, the revival of her purest aspirations in these latter days, the venerable author of the Christian Year." (c) The Christian Psalmist; or, Hymns, Selected and Original. By James Montgomery, Author of `The World before the Flood,' and other Poems. With an Introductory Essay. "The liveliest emblem of Heaven that I know upon earth is, when the people of God, in the deep sense of his excellence and bounty, from hearts abounding with love and joy, join together, both in heart and voice, in the cheerful and melodious singing of his praises." - Baxter's Saints' Rest. 1825
Parts I-IV contain hymns from various authors, numbered 1-461. Part V, containing hymns 462-562, consists of original hymns by James Montgomery.
Montgomery's Preface is dated Sheffield, October, 1825. It is an extended essay, in which Montgomery sets out his own standards of hymn-writing, and addresses questions of the relationship between hymns and poetry and the scarcity of hymns written by the greatest poets. In the course of his essay, he gives an appraisal of some of his most admired hymn-writers, including Bishop Ken, Watts, Wesley, Cowper and Addison.

This was one of a number of independent hymn-books current in Anglican churches before 1860, whose editors or proprietors agreed to withdraw them from parish use and to join the syndicate which eventually became The Proprietors of Hymns Ancient and Modern. This joint action greatly facilitated the immediate success of the latter book on its publication in 1861.

Murray, Shirley Erena: In Every Corner Sing
In Every Corner Sing: The Hymns of Shirley Erena Murray: Hope Publishing Co., 1992.
Originally published privately by the author as a small collection of her hymn texts; enlarged and re-issued by Hope under the same title in 1992, with texts and tune settings of all her hymns to that date.
The enlarged edition contains 80 hymns with tunes, together with four poems without music. Some of the tunes are taken from other hymnals; but many appear to have been composed for the words, by a variety of composers.
The author provides an appendix containing a brief annotation of every hymn text, and a Topical Index is also included.
