Praxis Pietatis melica. Das ist: Ubung der Gottseligkeit in Christlichen und trostreichen Gesängen, 1640 or 1644 (date uncertain)
Published in Berlin in the mid-17th century, and initially the work of Johann Crüger (as editor), a number of whose tunes appeared in it. The book - or associated books with the same name - went through a very large number of editions; Julian (p.272) lists 45 Berlin editions and 12 from Frankfurt, the most recent being a Berlin edition of c.1736 containing 1316 hymns. There appears, however, to be some uncertainty about the dates of some of the earlier editions.
From 1666 (12th edition) it was edited by Jacob Hintze (cf. notes on RS-191 Salzburg, Peter Sohren, and others.
It is an important source of many hymns by Paul Gerhardt, Johann Franck and other leading hymn-writers of the period, and of tunes by Crüger and Hintze.

(a) Adelaide Anne Procter: Legends and Lyrics; A Book of Verse, 1858
- Xref:
- RS-66 My God, I thank thee, who hast made
(b) - do - enlarged edition, 1862
In a combined volume, printed (75th thousand) in 1892, the above appears in two sections. The first section, containing 85 poems (including "My God, I thank Thee"), includes A.A.P.'s dedication to Matilda M.Hays dated May 1858, and a biographical Introduction by Charles Dickens. The second, with a separate title page marked "Second Volume" and its own Table of Contents, contains 60 poems (including "The Lost Chord"). The second section is undated, apart from the printer's 1892 impression; but it may be assumed to consist of the additional Poems included in 1862.
A footnote to the Contents of the first section states
Some of the above Poems have appeared in "Household Words," and are here republished with corrections.
A footnote to the Contents of the second section states
Some of the pieces contained in this Volume have already appeared in "All the Year Round," "The English Woman's Journal." &c.
("Household Words" and "All the Year Round" were both periodicals edited by Charles Dickens. The "E.Woman's J." has not been identified.)

In an editorial notice in the G.B & I. Hymn Society Bulletin for July 1950 (Vol.II No.11 {52} p.171), Erik Routley complained sharply about the large number of "errors of typography and fact" and about what he regarded as defects of arrangement and editorial judgement, and concluded with the comment "the wildest and most nightmarish of all the mysteries concerning this strange production is that in the Preface, among the names of the distinguished musicians who have had a hand in the book's compilation, there appears the name of Dr Vaughan Williams".
(d) The Public School Hymn Book, Third edition, corrected 1959

The re-named Fourth Edition of The Public School Hymn Book.
This was a freshly prepared book, rather than a revision of its predecessors. It contained 346 hymns, and a small selection of psalms and canticles for chanting. It was edited by a committee consisting of D.R.Wigram (chairman: Headmaster of Monkton Combe School and - from 1963 - Chairman of the Headmasters' Conference),; John Wilson (secretary: Director of Music at Charterhouse); Leonard Blake (Director of Music at Malvern College); and G.D'O.Snow (Headmaster of Ardingley College).
An introduction consisting of a 35-page historical survey of hymns and tunes was contributed by Erik Routley.
A brief Foreword was contributed by Donald Coggan, then Archbishop of York. Click here . . . to see this, together with the Editorial Preface.
There are numerous references in the Rejoice & Sing Companion or in this Enchiridion to the 1964 book, though some of them arise only because a particular tune arrangement or words variation may be found in that book; a small number relate to hymns or tunes which were first published in HCS.
