Watts, I.: The Psalms of David . . .
Isaac Watts:
The Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament, And apply'd to the Christian State and Worship. By I.Watts. London: Printed by J.Clark, at the Bible and Crown in the Poultry, &c., 1719
In this revolutionary work, containing paraphrases of most of the Psalms or parts of Psalms (and often more than one paraphrase of the same Psalm) Watts carried out the promise made in the Preface to his Hymns & Spiritual Songs, to implement a full "Christianization" of the Psalms. His reasons for doing so are set out forcefully in his Preface to this work, in which he set out to demolish the commonly held view that "nothing should be sung in Church except the untouched words of Scripture".
