Wedderburn, J.: Guid & Godlie Ballates
(Julian, pp.1245b, 1021b, 1032b)
Guid and Godlie Ballates: John (? and Robert) Wedderburn, c.1542-46; later entitled Ane Compendious Buik of Godly and Spiritual Sangis, 1578 and possibly earlier (e.g.1568), including additions by other writers or translators.
The earliest editions contained translations of German hymns and metrical psalms made by John Wedderburn during his first period of exile from Scotland, when he emigrated to Wittemburg and made the acquaintance of Luther and other Reformers. There is no extant copy (according to Julian) that can be dated earlier than 1568.
The contents of the 1578 edition are given by Julian as
Although the Collection is now described as the pioneering source of Scottish psalmody and hymnody, it appears to have aroused some opposition in its day (compelling John Wedderburn to flee again to the continent in 1546); and one at least of its original ballads was banned by the General Assembly of 1568. It clearly helped, however, to prepare the ground for the introduction to Scotland of the Anglo-Genevan Psalters (1564/65) and the eventual adoption of the Scottish Psalter of 1650.

Welsh Congregational Hymn-books
(See also Llyfr Tonau ac Emynau, 1868 ed. Joseph David Jones)
(a) Y Caniedydd Cynulleidfaol, 1895
Llyfr Tonau ac Emynau yr Annibynwyr Cymraeg. [Welsh Congregational Hymn and Tune Book]. Music editor: David Emlyn Evans.
Contained 300 tunes and 930 Welsh hymns; with an Appendix of 30 `popular' English hymns (in English); 16 prose psalms and 9 other prose passages set to anglican chants; 25 anthems; and 2 `Sanctuses'. As is commonly found in Welsh hymn-books, the hymns are arranged under the tunes to which they are set, each tune being printed once only, with the words of all the hymns set to that tune following the music. Each item therefore has two numbers, one for the tune and one for the words.
This arrangement applies also to the two successor books mentioned below.
