Winkworth, C.: Lyra Germanica

(a) Catherine Winkworth: Lyra Germanica (1st Series), 1855

(b) - do - new edition (1st series) 1858 } (copy in possession)

(c) - do - new edition (1st series) 1861 } (copy in Brit.Lib.)

Lyra Germanica: Hymns for the Sundays and Chief Festivals of the Christian Year. Translated from the German by Catherine Winkworth. New Edition. London: Longman, Green, Longman and Roberts. { 1858 } { 1861 }

The Preface is dated Alderley Edge, July 16th, 1855, and begins:

"The following hymns are selected from the Chevalier Bunsen's `Versuch eines allgemeinen Gesang und Gebetbuchs,' published in 1833. From the large number there given, about nine hundred, little more than one hundred have been chosen . . . . "

A footnote to this Preface, dated Nov.20th 1855, reads:

" *** In the second edition a few corrections have been made and additional verses given in some of the hymns: a few among them are however still given in an abbreviated form, where the omitted verses appeared to be decidedly inferior in merit, or to contain no new thought. I have also exchanged the former version of `Ein feste Burg' for one, as it seems to me, much superior, which I owe to the kindness of the Rev. William Gaskell."
Xrefs:
RS-215 Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended
RS-585 Ein feste Burg (Wm Gaskell's tr.)
RS-154 From heaven above to earth I come
RS-140 O Lord, how shall I meet you

(d) Lyra Germanica: Second Series: The Christian Life. Translated from the German by Catherine Winkworth. London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans and Roberts. 1858

Preface dated Alderley Edge, May 19th 1858:

" . . . The hymns in this series have been chosen from various sources . . . The greater number, however, are taken from Bunsen's `Versuch eines allgemeinen Gesang und Gebet buchs', a collection distinguished . . . The short notices prefixed to some of these hymns are derived from the same source. . .

" . . . The original metre has been almost invariably maintained."

RS-233 Christ the Lord is risen again
RS-446 Deck thyself, my soul, with gladness
