This included an appendix of tunes by Orlando Gibbons.
For his hymns George Wither used a variety of metres outside the metrical-psalm repertory of the time. He therefore commissioned Orlando Gibbons to provide specially written tunes (sixteen in all) in an appendix to Hymnes and Songs. `Gibbons', he said, `hath chosen to make his music agreeable to the matter, and what the common apprehension can best admit, rather than the curious fancies of the time.' (By `fancies' he meant the then fashionable elaborate instrumental fantasias.)
Each of these tunes, melody and bass, was marked with the number of the Song for which it was composed: hence the custom of referring to each as "Song x" Gibbons cannot have had congregations in mind when writing the tunes (singing Wither's hymns in church would then have been illegal); yet they meet the needs of modern congregations excellently.

(Julian, p.1294a)
(a) Christopher Wordsworth: The Holy Year; or Hymns for Sundays and Holy-Days, And other Occasions; London, 1862
Contained 199 hymns, and 10 tunes for ` . . . those hymns which cannot be matched . . . to some tune which may be found in [contemporary] collections'. (`Contemporary collections' would have included the first edition of Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1861.)
In the First Line Index, hymns which had already appeared in other collections were marked with an asterisk; those without an asterisk were published therein for the first time. Neither of the hymns by Christopher Wordsworth in RS are so marked, thus indicating that these were newly published in 1862.

- RS-191 Songs of thankfulness and praise
The book contained a long Preface (30 pages), beginning as follows -
. . . The primary requisite of a Hymn-Book designed for use in Public Worship, seems to be, that it should follow the guidance of the Church, and be adjusted to her Ritual. A Hymn-Book of the Church ought to represent the mind of the Church. It ought to show an intelligent approbation of her intentions, and a dutiful submission to her appointments. In a word, a Hymn-Book of the Church of England ought to be a faithful companion to the Book of Common Prayer. . . .
