Description of a B.L. copy seen

A copy seen in the British Library appears to have belonged to John Julian, and to have been used by him during the preparation of his Dictionary of Hymnology. It was presented at some stage to the Library of Church House, Westminster, via Southwell Church, and subsequently acquired by the British Museum.

It contains a number of MS notes, as well as Julian's signature on the Title pages; these have been compared with Julian's hand-writing in the MSS of the 1907 Supplement to the Dictionary (also in the British Library), and these are undoubtedly all in the same hand.

Details from the title pages are transcribed below.

Within the book there are pencil marks in Julian's hand-writing against individual hymns, consisting of one or more of these letters -

M C K G N

The copy has been mutilated by the neat excision of v.5 of No.5 `Sun of my soul' (p.4 verso), affecting vv.3-4 of No.4 `Glory to Thee, my God, this night' on p.3 recto.

Notes (by the present editor) about the
contents of the book and the following Index.

Many hymns have a doxology attached, most of these being drawn from a small number of `standard' doxologies (including Bishop Ken's from his Morning & Evening hymns). The number of verses is shown in this Index, together with the presence of a Compilers' doxology where this is self-evident. Where the same doxology serves for several hymns, a cross-reference to the first occurrence is noted here.

Julian's hand-written notes are indicated here at the right-hand edge; my own annotations are in square brackets. A hand-written initial in the source book appears to be a J but might be an I (shown below as [I] ).

Corresponding numbers are shown for Rejoice & Sing (RS); A.& M. Standard Edition 1924 &c.; the First Edition 1861; and the 1859 Trial Edition itself. In some cases a version or translation different from that in the 1859 trial book was used in later editions or in RS; numbers are bracketed where this is assumed to be the case, though in one or two instances the identification is guess-work on my part.

Hymns translated from or based on Latin originals are marked with * against the First Line. It will be evident how much the Trial Book selection was drawn from such sources, there being 71 of these in the first 104 hymns, and 10 in the remaining 34 hymns. (The last 34 hymns appear to have constituted a `general' section, in alphabetical order of first lines, while the first 104 relate to particular liturgical needs.)

Back page verso (transcription)

These hymns are printed for temporary use, and as a specimen, still open to revision, of the Hymn Book now in course of preparation by a Committee of Clergymen, the publication of which has been postponed to Advent, 1860. Some of these hymns, such as Bishop Ken's morning and evening hymns, will ultimately be given more fully; and of some only the first lines are now inserted for want of space. The Book will probably contain about 300 hymns; ample provision being made for Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Communion, Saints' Days, Harvest Festivals, School Feasts, Funerals, Fast and Thanksgiving Days, Missions, &c. A Sixpenny edition will be puiblished in good type. Any suggestions will be gladly received by the secretary of the committee, the Rev. Sir Henry Williams Baker, Bart., Monkland Vicarage, near Leominster.
