[Transcription of Obituary Notice in the Year Book of the Congregational Union of England & Wales for 1924, page 98, from a copy in Dr Williams's Library, London]

Horder, William Garrett

. . . was born at Salisbury, on October 6, 1841. Trained for the ministry at Cheshunt, under Dr. Reynolds, he entered on his first charge at Peasley Cross, St. Helens, Lancs (1866-68). Afterwards he held pastorates at Abbey Road, Torquay (1869-73); Wood Green (1873-93); College Chapel, Bradford (1893-96); and finally at Ealing (1896-1922), where he fulfilled a quarter of a century of notable service to the church and town.

He was a fearless thinker, a deep and stimulating preacher, and gave his people the best that was in him. He was also the author or compiler of many volumes:- "The God that Jesus Saw," "The Poet's Bible," "A Treasury of American Sacred Song," "The Silent Voice," "The Other World," etc. But it is as a great hymnologist that Garrett Horder will be remembered beyond his own denomination and country. In his "Worship Song," adopted by many churches of different denominations, he set the model of what a good hymn-book should be.

Within a few months after his retirement, and almost in harness, he died at Ealing on December 19, 1922, in his eighty-second year.
