The Enchiridion

Introductory note about the

Notes on the Source Books

These notes were originally compiled during work on Rejoice & Sing and its subsequent Companion. The cross-references (Xrefs) to hymn texts or tunes refer to entries in the R.& S. Companion; the texts or tunes usually occur in the Source book in question, but sometimes the reference is only to an incidental mention in the course of the Companion entry.

In many cases we have (as yet) little or no information about a source book, other than its connection with a particular text or tune. The editor will welcome any information from others who may be able to fill some of the gaps. Please get in touch with David Goodall with any corrections or additions which might be incorporated.

Much of the information given here has been obtained from secondary sources only. Some of the books referred to are represented in the editor's rather modest collection; others have been studied in library copies in various places. The main Libraries visited have been

The British Library, London [BL]
Dr Williams's Library, London [W]
The Congregational Library, London [CL]
The Elias Collection at Westminster College, Cambridge [EW]
St Deiniol's Library, Hawarden [D]
The English Faculty Library, Cambridge University [CU]
Mansfield College Library, Oxford [M]
Birmingham City Library [BC]
Lambeth Palace Library, London [LP]

In addition, Shropshire County Library has provided borrowing facilities through the Inter-Library Loans Service [ILL].

The Initials in square brackets [ ] have been given in the Source Book notes against some of the books consulted in this way.

During the preparation of these HTML pages (which is going to take several years) many of the cross-references will not be effective. Two areas of further information, in particular, may not be included, either because the material is not fully assembled, or because copyright restrictions may apply.

Under the heading "XRefs" in these notes, references are made to
