PREFACE

_____

In issuing this Book of Praise for Children, the Committee of the Congregational Union of England and Wales desire very cordially to thank the authors of the Hymns included in this volume - and in some cases where the authors are deceased, their representatives - for permission, which in every case has been most kindly and generously granted, to use the Hymns which bear their names.

The thanks of the Committee are also gratefully tendered to the following publishers and others for the use of Hymns which were their copyright.

To Messrs. Richardson of Derby, for Faber's Hymns.
To the Sunday School Union of London, for Hymn No.41 [Sarah Doudney: "We sing a loving Jesus"].
To Messrs. Isbister and Co., for Hymn No. 180 [Matilda B. Edwards: "God make my life a little light"], and for the use of the late Dean Alford's Hymns.
To Messrs. Nelson and Sons, for Hymn No. 99 [J.D. Burns: "Hushed was the evening hymn"].
To the Proprietors of Hymns Anciet and Modern, for Hymns Nos. 321 [H.W. Baker: "Lord, Thy word abideth"], 343 [J.E. Bode: O Jesu, I have promised"].
To Messrs. Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, for Hymn No. 229 [M .Barr: "Saviour now the day is ended"].
To Messrs. Pickering, for Hymn No. 81 [E. Caswall: "I met the good Shepherd"].
To Messrs. W. Oliphant and Co., for Hymn No. 235 [Mary L. Duncan: "Jesus, tender Shepherd, hear me"].
And to Messrs. J.T. Hayes, Messrs. J. Clarke and Co., S.W. Partridge and Co., and Mr. J. Hodges, for Hymns which were their copyright.

The Committee beg also to thank the following for the liberal terms on which they have permitted the use of Hymns their copyright.

Messrs. Masters and Co., for permission to use Mrs. Alexander's Hymns.
Messrs. Longmans, for Hymns from "Lyra Germanica".
Messrs. G. Bell and Co., for Hymn No. 349 [Adelaide A. Procter: "One by one the sands are flowing"].
J.T. Curwen, Esq., for Hymn No. 204 [J.S. Stallybrass: "Who through heaven is guiding"].

The most scrupulous care has been taken to avoid any infringement of copyright; but should any Hymns have been accidentally inserted without the necessary permission having been first obtained, the Committee trust the unintentional error may be kindly pardoned.

The Committee were fortunate in securing the services of the Rev. G.S. Barrett as Editor, and they desire to express their grateful sense of the thoroughness and efficiency which have characterised Mr. Barrett's labours in this capacity.

The Committee have further to thank the Rev. W.G. Horder, of Wood Green, N., for much valued assistance rendered to the editor of this Hymn Book, and for the use of the new edition of "The Book of Praise for Children," which Mr. Horder was about to publish, and which at the suggestion of the editor the Committee purchased, incorporating a great part of it in the present volme.

The Committee have also very gratefully to acknowledge the help rendered to the Editor by Mr. W.T. Brooke, of 157, Richmond Road, Hackney, who has revised the proofs of the Hymns, and without whose knowledge of Hymnology it would have been impossible for the Editor to have succeeded in producing a Hymn Book which has, at least, one merit - unhappily the rarest of all merits in Hymn Books - that of adhering rigidly in every case to the text of each Hymn as written by its Author.

In conclusion the Committee trust that this new Hymn Book for Children may be found serviceable in promoting, both in Families and in Sunday Schools, an earnest and healthy Christian life among the young.
