From 1963 to 1990 recordings at Society meetings were made on audio tape by the late G.Edward Jones. In April 1991 the tapes were lodged on permanent loan with the National Sound Archive, following an Agreement made between the Society and the NSA. on 26th July 1990. The NSA archives are now housed at the British Library, St Pancras, London, and may be consulted at the Library (by prior arrangement). The administrative enquiry desk is in the "Humanities 2" reading room on the second floor of the Main Library; listening arrangements are dealt with at the Enquiry Desk in the Music Section of the "Rare Books and Music" reading room on the first floor. (Note, however, that a British Library Reader's Pass is required for access to any of the Reading Rooms; this involves a formal application with appropriate references, and can take some time to arrange. See the BL web site for further details - www.bl.uk .)
The Collection is catalogued as
and consists of
Some paper-work is included or referred to. Many of the references are to articles or notices in the Hymn Society Bulletin. Most of the remainder (Act of Praise booklets; lecture hand-outs or synopses; event programmes or listings &c.) are physically represented in the Collection by copies of the original documents, boxed with the corresponding tapes. In some cases no recording was made, but documents have been retained with the Collection.

The tapes from 1963 to 1970 are mixed format, mostly two track made on Ficord and Ferrograph recorders. All these are MONO.
Tapes from 1971 onwards are single (full) track mostly made on NAGRA Model 4D and are MONO except for 1982 (cassettes) and 1990 (reels) which are STEREO.
Tapes have been left "tails out" to minimise print-through.
All NAGRA tapes are to C.C.I.R. compensation standard. Speeds are as marked on the leaders, usually 3¾ ips but largely musical programmes at 7½ ips.
Each tape is marked to show speed and identification code.
At the Annual Conference in 2004 the task of recording Hymn Society events was taken on by Philip Carter, as the Society's Sound Archivist. Several of the Lectures and other events were recorded at the same Conference. The recordings will provide an enduring record, continuing the Tape Collection made by Edward Jones between 1963 and 1990 (see above), and copies are also available to members for purchase.
The recordings are available in CD, tape or minidisc format (which should be specified when ordering). The current charge (2005 - ) is £3.50 each including postage, obtainable from Philip L.Carter, 50 Baynham Road, Knowle, Bristol BS4 2DR (pl.carter@btopenworld.com)
